New English word: Vaxication

The word “vaxication”, a new word, which is a combination of the terms “vaccine” and “vacation” has become more popular as more people are receiving their shots.

Shots here means “vaccination”. In this context the word “shots” has nothing to do with (gun) shots, but rather with injections, or more precisely, vaccinations. The term “shots” is always used in the plural, even if it’s just one vaccination.

The “correct” term for getting a vaccine, by the way, is “vaccination” or “innoculation”, but the idiomatic “getting my/your shots” is the term that is generally used.

The new “vaxication” is becoming used more widely as COVID-19 vaccines have become more available. The expression is used in a humorous way to talk about the travel plans people are making for the time after their vaccination.
