Nicht in falscher Sicherheit wiegen: Security vs. Safety

Gerade in ungewissen Zeiten suchen Menschen verstärkt Sicherheit.

“financial security” (finanziell abgesichert), “for security reasons” (aus Sicherheitsgründen) oder “to provide a security” (eine Bürgschaft stellen).

The same? Or not? Security vs. Safety

In uncertain times people increasingly look for security. Safety and security become even more important. In this context, today we’re looking at two terms that apparently have the same meaning, but are nevertheless quite different.

When you hear the word “security” in Germany, the first thought is probably towards strong gentlemen with lots of muscles. It used to be called “Sicherheitsdienst” which was not quite as confusing. The word “security” however, has many different meanings.

If you ask LEO for an English to German translation, then “safety” and “security” appear to have the same meaning. This is, unfortunately, not correct.

“Security” can be defined as “the activities involved in protecting a country, building or person against attack, danger, etc.” (Oxford Dictionary).

“Safety”, on the other hand is ” the state of being safe and protected from danger or harm” (Oxford Dictionary”.

So that’s why, for example, we hear about “Health & Safety” (occupational safety), “safety reasons”, “operational safety” (operational or work safety).

To add to the confusion, the word “security” has other meanings, especially when it is coupled with another term, e.g. “financial security”, “for security reasons” or “to provide a security”.

And the muscular employees? These are called “security guards”, but the security service as an organization is can be referred to as “security”. For example: “If you don’t stop yelling at me I’ll call security”.

By the way, there is a brand new online English course on occupational safety, namely “English for Health & Safety” on our EnM-24/7 learning platform.
